Did you know? August 7-13, 2011 is International Assistance Dog Week (IADW)

An Assistance Dog, also known as a Service Dog, is a dog trained to aid or assist a person with a disability. The jobs these dig perform are as unique as the people that they help. Some examples include: guide dogs for the blind; hearing/signal dogs for the deaf or hard of hearing; and mobility assistance dogs trained to assist a physically disabled person.

The goals of IADW are to:
  • Recognize and honor assistance dogs
  • Raise awareness and educate the public about assistance dogs
  • Honor puppy raisers and trainers
  • Recognize heroic deeds performed by assistance dogs in our communities

Here's a good set of tips on how to interact with a person and their service dog: http://www.wikihow.com/Interact-With-Someone-With-a-Service-Animal
